Public opinion on a completely cashless society in the Benelux in 2017, by country
This statistic shows the outcome to to the survey question: "If it were up to me, I would go completely cashless". Approximately 33 percent of the Belgian respondents in 2017 indicated they would go completely cashless if they had the choice, a percentage which is close to the European average.
In the last years, the number of available mobile payment apps in the Benelux countries steadily increased. In the Netherlands, banking apps from major banks as Rabobank, ING and ABN Amro were updated in 2013 to enable checkouts using iDEAL, a payment method with a current market share of over 50 percent. In March 2017, Belgian banks BNP Paribas Fortis, Fintro and Hello Bank! launched their support for Android Pay whilst the Swedish mobile payment platform Seqr was introduced in Luxembourg in July 2016.
