The Gmail/Yahoo Mail Age Divide

Gmail is the leader when it comes to email in the United States. According to a new poll by Morning Consult, 44 percent of people in the U.S. most frequently use Gmail, with their nearest rivals being Yahoo Mail on 26 percent.

Looking more closely at the survey results, a clear age trend can be seen. As our infographic shows, those at the younger end of the spectrum are much more likely to use Google's offering, with 61 percent of 18 to 29 year olds sending mails predominantly with Gmail, but only 24 percent of those aged 65 and over. The difference isn't quite so pronounced when it comes to Yahoo's service. Nevertheless, there is a 12 point difference between the youngest age group and the oldest.

With that in mind, the future is looking brighter for Gmail. Yahoo will need to find a way to appeal to a younger audience if they are to continue to challenge Google's dominance.
