Most popular types of fandom activities in Japan 2023
According to a survey conducted in January 2023, collecting information online was the most common activity among respondents in Japan who engaged in fandom activities (oshikatsu). While 74 percent had previously gathered information on the internet, over 55 percent of the respondents said they had purchased goods. A majority of survey participants reported spending up to 10 thousand yen on fan activities each month in the same survey. Oshikatsu, a combination of the words oshi (a favorite member of a band, sports team, etc.) and katsu (activity), describes activities aimed at supporting a favorite personality, character, or object.
