Retail sales of apparel, shoes, hats and textiles China 2013-2023
In 2023, the sales value of apparel, footwear, headwear and textiles in China amounted to about 1.41 trillion yuan, up from 1.3 trillion yuan in the previous year. The apparel and footwear retail sales in China have foreseen steady growth in the coming years.
Chinese fashion consumers
The world has witnessed the rise of China’s fashion market in recent years. Chinese per capita spending on clothing and shoes has grown over threefold in the last two decades. In 2021, China remained the world’s second-largest apparel market. Nowadays, cashed-up Chinese fashion consumers value not only good quality but also unique designs. Compared to the older generations, millennials are willing to spend more on clothes. On average, more than 73 percent of Chinese university students spend over 500 yuan each month on apparel.
Rise of domestic brands
Chinese consumers showed an increasing passion for domestic apparel brands. Over two-thirds of Chinese respondents stated that they prefer domestic fashion brands over foreign ones. Among China’s top ten clothing brands, five were from domestic producers. Bosideng, the Chinese outerwear maker, ranked as the most popular domestic brand among Chinese fashion shoppers.
