Internet access by device in South Africa 2024
As of January 2024, most South Africans accessed the internet using a mobile phone: a share of 98.7 percent of internet users connected via this device. Most users adopted smartphones, while only 2.6 percent were connected using feature phones. Furthermore, roughly 81 percent used a laptop or a desktop computer to connect to the internet. Personal laptops/desktops were preferred over the ones provided by an employer. Alternatively, only 12.7 percent accessed the internet using smart home devices.
