Prescription opioid dispensing rates in the U.S. 2006-2022

In 2012, there were around 81.3 prescriptions of opioids dispensed in the United States per 100 persons. By the year 2022, the rate of opioids dispensed had dropped to 39.5 per 100 persons. In response to the ongoing opioid epidemic, prescriptions of opioids have decreased in recent years. This statistic depicts the rate of opioid prescriptions dispensed in the U.S. from 2006 to 2022.

"Source for all dispensing data: IQVIA Xponent 2006–2020. IQVIA Xponent is based on a sample of approximately 50,400 retail (non-hospital) pharmacies, which dispense nearly 92% of all retail prescriptions in the United States. For this database, a prescription is a new or refill prescription dispensed at a retail pharmacy in the sample and paid for by commercial insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, cash or its equivalent, and other third-party coverage. This database does not include mail order prescriptions."

IQVIA Xponent is based on a sample of approximately 56,500 retail (non-hospital) pharmacies, which dispense nearly 93% of all retail prescriptions in the United States. For this database, a prescription is a new or refilled prescription dispensed at a retail pharmacy in the sample and paid for by commercial insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, cash or its equivalent, and other third-party coverage. This database does not include mail-order prescriptions. Geographic location is based on the location of the prescriber. Methadone dispensed through methadone treatment programs is not included in the IQVIA Xponent data."
