The gross revenue of Broadway shows in New York bounced back in the 2022/2023 season, after shrinking with the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While the 2021/2022 season only included 42 weeks due to the impact of the health crisis, the 2022/2023 season returned to the 52-week program. Overall, the gross revenue amounted to roughly 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2022/2023, nearly doubling from the previous year but not catching up with pre-pandemic levels.
Considering the international fame of Broadway shows, it’s no surprise that such performances also built a significant social media fan base. As of August 2023, Hamilton was the most followed show on Instagram, recording about 1.7 million followers on the social media platform. However, the Lion King claimed the top spot when it came to the most liked Broadway shows on Facebook, with the Disney classic registering more than 2.8 million Facebook likes as of August 2023.

¹ The 2017/2018 season included 53 weeks. This is because every seven years a 53rd week is added to account for variances in the calendar year.
² The 2019/2020 season included 41 weeks rather than 52 due to the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The week ending March 8, 2020 was the last full week of performances before the shutdown.
³ In the 2021/2022 season, Broadway shows gradually returned after the industry-wide shutdown started in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season included 42 weeks, but 16 weeks reported several cancellations of shows.
