Although the number of healthcare institutions has fallen in Greece, the number of personnel working there has fluctuated since 2000. The number of workers in hospitals in Greece increased from 2000 to 2009, but it has been declining ever since. Since 2006, the number of physicians in Greece has increased overall, going from approximately 59.6 thousand in 2009 to 65.5 thousand in 2017.
Expenditure in the health sector
Greece’s expenditure on healthcare was 7.8 percent of its’ GDP in 2019. This share has experienced fluctuations since 2010 which may be explained by the unstable economic situation in the country since the financial crisis. In comparison to other European countries this makes Greece the middle of the road when ranked in 2019. Germany had the highest share of expenditure on health, spending 12.8 percent of its GDP in this year.
